Windows Server 2022 builds on the solid foundation of Windows Server 2019 by adding many new features in three key areas: security, Azure hybrid integration and management, and the application platform.

Furthermore, Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition enables you to leverage the benefits of the cloud to keep your virtual machines up-to-date while minimizing downtime.

Windows Server 2022 introduces advanced multi-layer security, Azure hybrid capabilities, and a flexible application platform. We are including secured-core capabilities in this release to help protect hardware, firmware, and Windows Server OS capabilities from advanced security threats.

To reduce the risk of firmware vulnerabilities and advanced malware, the Secured-core server relies on technologies such as Windows Defender System Guard and Virtualization-based Security. The new version also includes secured connectivity, which includes several new features such as faster and more secure encrypted HTTPS connections, industry standard SMB AES 256 encryption, and more.

Windows Server 2022 improves hybrid server management with significantly improved VM management, an enhanced event viewer, and many other new capabilities in the Windows Admin Center.

This release also adds a lot to Windows containers, like making image sizes smaller so they can be downloaded faster, making it easier to implement network policies, and adding tools for containerizing .NET applications. 

Security

Windows Server 2022's new security capabilities combine other security capabilities in Windows Server across multiple areas to provide defense-in-depth protection against advanced threats. Windows Server 2022 includes advanced security with multiple layers. This provides servers with the complete protection they require right now.

Azure has hybrid capabilities

Windows Server 2022 includes hybrid features that make connecting your data centers to Azure easier than ever. This allows you to be more efficient and adaptable.

Platform for applications

Application compatibility and the Windows Container experience with Kubernetes are among the platform enhancements for Windows Containers. The size of the Windows Container image can be cut by up to 40%, which will make it start up 30% faster and run better.

Storage Migration Service

Storage Migration Service enhancements in Windows Server 2022 make it easier to migrate storage from more source locations to Windows Server or Azure. The following features are available when the Storage Migration Server orchestrator is running on Windows Server 2022: 

• Migrate local users and groups to the new server.
• Storage migration from failover clusters, migration to failover clusters, and migration between standalone servers and failover clusters are all possible.
• Migrate storage from a Linux server that uses Samba.
• Easily synchronize migrated shares into Azure by using Azure File Sync.
• Migrate to new networks such as Azure.
• NetApp CIFS servers should be migrated from NetApp FAS arrays to Windows servers and clusters.
