The antennas included in these kits utilize the same 5/8 wave design as FireFly antennas, which have a patented tunable-tip feature.

To maintain the desired center band position, the antenna's frequency is adjusted when used with the tuned coaxial feedline.

Therefore, these antennas can only be used with the Firestik NGP cable. The core material of the antenna is a 5/16-inch diameter reinforced plastic (fiberglass) tube, which offers a balance of flexibility and strength due to FireStik's custom blended formula. The mounting base is made of chrome plated machine brass and has standard 3/8"-24 threads.

A high efficiency, voltage increasing helical wind is used in the design. The coils are protected against shorting and corrosion induced resistance by using heavy insulated, light-gauge copper wire. The antenna in these kits features FireStik's patented "no tools required" tunable tip, making SWR adjustments fast and easy.

These kits are rated for 100 watts. Each antenna is covered with a static reducing, heavy PVC shrink tubing that contains both pigment and UV stabilizers. The coaxial feedline used in these kits is a high-quality seventeen-foot RG-58 A/U cable. To prevent breakage caused by vibrations in mobile installations, a multi-wire stranded center conductor is used.

The center conductor is surrounded by a flexible polyvinyl insulation for long life. To minimize signal leakage, the center conductor is shielded with a copper wire braid that provides about 95% coverage, exceeding the industry standard of 70%. The coaxial feedline not only carries the signal to the antenna but also acts as a tuned circuit to create the necessary counterpoise.

If a longer cable length is required, the user can add standard RG-58 A/U cable between the radio and system cable, preferably in lengths that are multiples of nine feet. 

For mounting, these kits utilize FireStik's molded "teardrop" side mount. The black plastic shell has a textured finish for a nice appearance. All hardware and coax connections are concealed within the vehicle's inner wall to maintain visual integrity and protect against weather exposure.
