The Extreme 5420 supports a number of Ethernet Fabric services, including Fabric Connect and IP Fabric. It also enables Fabric Attach for connecting to Layer 2 or Layer 3 Fabric Services automatically. Extreme's Fabric Connect on the 5420 enables the creation of virtualized networks that automate network operations, simplify network provisioning, and improve security, all while relieving network and IT personnel.

When using Switch Engine, the Extreme Networks ExtremeSwitching 5420F 48-port Switch additionally enables high-speed stacking via its two built-in SFP-DD stacking ports. Using qualified SFP+/SFP-DD direct attach cables and optical transceivers, up to eight systems can be stacked.
